biography
scionic has been in the making since 1995.
ajr and his wife val lived in a very isolated area with almost no fellowship.
he bought an old acoustic guitar and started learning hymns so that they could sing praises to God in their home.
he also tried to figure out how to play some of rose's songs.
somewhere between the two, he started writing his own songs, and before too long he bought an electric guitar, then a drum machine, then a 4-track.
not long after, in 1997, he gathered a few of these songs and put out a tape for some friends under the name "scion". the songs were a mixture of alternative and techno/industrial rock.
in 1999 he added the "ic" to "scion" and began work on "gone", which was released in 2001. this time, the songs were focused almost exlusively on the industrial rock/metal genre.
now ajr is returning to a more alternative sound. we shall see what the future holds...
faq
who's in the band?
scionic consists soley of yours truly: ajr. a couple of attempts have been made to form an actual band, but nothing has worked out so far.
where did you come up with the name "scionic"?
one day, ajr was looking up a word in webster's dictionary and the word "scion" caught his eye. he was intrigued by the meaning: scion (sy'-on) means "1. a
detached living portion of a plant joined to a stock in
grafting and usually supplying solely aerial parts to a
graft; 2. descendant, child".
this definition reminded him of a couple of things: first, paul the apostle wrote
that we as gentiles were "grafted" into the
kingdom of God, like branches from a wild olive
tree that have been grafted into a good one. and then through faith in Jesus, we are sons and
daughters of God. since he happened to be looking for a band name, he tried it out. everyone he asked liked it, and it passed the two-week test, so he kept it. he later added the "ic"' to complete the word scionic.
if these songs are about Jesus, the
light of the world, shouldn't your music, artwork,
web site, etc., be lighter & brighter? why is it so dark?
the atmosphere of scionic has historically been dark due to ajr's realisation that the churches are failing to follow in our Lord Jesus's footsteps (e.g., the "gone" album). now his focus has shifted more to the individual, especially his own walk with Christ, and how difficult it can be to live up to our own expectations. this too is a dark, brooding matter and will influence the atmosphere of scionic accordingly.
what gear do you use?
jackson sdk-2, pod v2, boss dr-660, e-mu audity 2000, cakewalk sonar 2.
can you come play in my town?
scionic is a one-man band. as such, it would be impossible to go on tour or even play locally. so the answer is no, unless God intervenes drastically.
what other bands do you recommend?
if you're looking for heavy music, try these bands: rose, believer, living sacrifice, chatterbox, warlord, mindrage, globalwavesystem, or nailed promise. some alternative bands ajr likes are between thieves, glisten, and mad at the world. no matter what style of music you like, you need to listen to keith green and lamb.
